Offices

are located in Room 214 of the School of Communication, Information and Library Studies (SCILS) building. Ms. Faye Brown, graduate student administrator, can be reached at 732-932-7500 x8200, or by e-mail at fdbrown@scils.rutgers.edu; she is always happy to help students with questions. The office is usually open daily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Classrooms

that you will use are mostly in the SCILS building (100 #s on the ground floor, 200s on the 2nd, etc). On the class schedule these are shown as CIL-#. HH stands for Hardenbergh Hall. Sometimes meetings are held at the RU Student Center.

Information for students

is distributed in alphabetic mail slots located on the third floor of SCILS between Rooms 302 and 303 and on the nearby table. You should check this area regularly for information on meetings, changes in scheduled activities, course material, etc. Some faculty use the boxes to return student papers. These boxes should not be used for U.S. mail. The University Post Office and student mailboxes are in Records Hall. All students who wish to receive regular mail on campus can apply for a University Postbox in Records Hall. Intercampus mail may be received at SCILS and distributed through the third floor mail slots, and may be sent through the departmental office (no postage necessary, but use campus mail envelope). There is a U.S. Post Office outlet in Records Hall, and stamps are available at most student centers.

The table in the hall between Rooms 302 amd 303

is used to distribute information about registration, colloquia, professional associations, diploma applications, and other matters. Check it regularly, please! Class schedules, diploma applications, etc. can also be picked up in Room 214

Bulletin boards

in the long third floor hallway are devoted to information for LIS students. Check these for news items, scholarship annnouncements, departmental events, etc. Also check the Professional Development Studies Web site for workshop and conference announcements. SCILS Professional Development Studies (PDS) workshops are free to students (excluding food and materials) on a space available basis. You must register with the PDS office (Rooms 107-108 in the SCILS building). The Library and Information Science Student Association (LISSA) and other student groups have bulletin boards on the third floor, where information is posted about elections, meetings, social gatherings, etc. Also, each of the LIS student associations (RASL, RUSLA, LISSA, etc.) have a designated bulletin board where they highlight special opportunities and activities.

Student associations/activities:

Membership is automatic in the Graduate Student Association, which is funded through your student fees. GSA runs the Graduate Student Lounge (New Brunswick side of the College Avenue Student Center), where you can find newspapers, TV, a study area, film series, trips, and mixers. GSA also provides funding for other graduate student functions, and can supply a 12-passenger van to graduate student organizations.

LISSA arranges trips to the Library of Congress and other places of interest; represents students at faculty meetings, and maintains liaison with faculty committees. LISSA also acts as the student chapter of the American Library Association - (LISSA),and the New Jersey Library Association. Other student associations include a chapters of the American Society for Information Science & Technology - (RUASIS); the Rutgers student group of the Special Libraries Association - (RUSLA); the Rutgers Association of School Librarians (RASL); and the Student Organization for Unique and Rare Collections Everywhere (SOURCE). See the section on Preparing for Your Future to learn why joining an association is important. Watch the LISSA listserv and bulletin boards for announcements of activities.

Job announcements

can be checked on the SCILS Web site -- click on Placement Services. Browse these announcements even if not currently seeking employment.Knowing requirements for positions of interest early provides a reality check and helps in selecting courses. See also Resources for Finding a Position for placement information.

Faculty contact information

are found in the LIS directory on the SCILS web site (click on the name for office location, hours, and phone. If you wish to leave a note for someone, you may leave it on the bulletin boards by faculty office doors, or, during LIS office hours, leave a message in the mail boxes in the Dean's office, Room 314. Many faculty have answering machines, and most read their e-mail regularly. We count on you to use e-mail throughout the time that you are in the program, and to read the LISSA online postings faithfully (see First Things).
