This miscellany of plans geared to some selected careers is suggestive, not prescriptive, and other faculty will give you different advice! Your plan must be tailored to your particular interests and be developed with an advisor.
I have starred (*) courses that seem to me to be important preparation for a given career path. In some cases, where there are multiple career directions within a category, courses that may be essential for one path but not all are not starred. The total credits often exceed 36, giving you choices but also recognizing that you need to learn more than our short program permits!
At least three of the following courses must be taken by all students, but all six are highly recommended: 510 Human Information Behavior, 520 Organizing Information, 530 Principles of Searching, 550 Information Technology for Libraries and Information Agencies, 570 Management of Libraries and Information Centers, 580 Knowledge Structures and the Information Professions. Of these, 550, 530, and 510 are good to take in your first semester, as they are pre-requisites for other courses. The management course (570) can be put off until later, unless you are planning to specialize in this area. Please note: 501 and 502 are required of all students; those seeking educational media certification must follow the prescribed plan in the catalog; students who lack experience in the field they wish to pursue are urged to take 592(01). Take care to note pre- and co-requisites as you plan your program -- be especially careful if you are a full time student, and don't forget to get faculty advice.
