Awards for MLIS Students
Why should you apply? Not only can you ease
your tuition burden, but you can
travel to professional conferences at no cost to you, have your work
published,
and enhance your resume! Below is a mere sampling of opportunities
available. Check professional websites, watch lissa_l announcements,
and
bulletin boards. Don't forget to look at the ALA publication, Financial
Assistance, in the Alexander Reference collection,
Z668.A575, or go to http://www.ala.org and
click on awards at the top of the page. Often
awards go begging, so go for it!
- Henry Voos Student Paper Award Small cash award plus publication, offered by
the New Jersey Chapter of ASIS (Henry Voos was on the LIS faculty until his death in 1986[?]). Topics should address issues in special
library collections, information science, systems analysis, user studies, or
other related areas. Fall deadline is mid-December, spring deadline is mid-May. Consult Professor Saracevic for more details.
- ARLIS/NA Gerd Muehsam Award is given annually for the most outstanding paper
on art or visual resource librarianship: cash, travel costs, ARLIS membership,
publication. Entry deadline is usually December 1, but check the site.
- BIOSIS and Chemical Abstracts Awards administered by the ASIS/Special Interest
Group/Biological and Chemical Information Systems, defray expenses of attending
an annual ASIS meeting. Students must have a demonstrated interest in
biology or chemistry. Watch for announcements.
- The New York Black Librarians Caucus offers the Donna Hoke Scholarship
for 2004. The group offers two $1000 scholarships for library students
of African descent. Applicants must be residents of New York State.
Application deadline is July 31, 2004. Contact New York Black Librarians

- Dow Jones News/Retrieval Professional Researchers Essay Contest -- cash award;
must be SLA member; February deadline.
- SLA Information Technology, Business, and Pharmaceutical Division
Student
Awards -- pay for conference travel, etc. Check http://wwww.sla.org/ as
well as the RUSLA bulletin board in the Student Lounge
- NJLLA Grant -- to help pay for attending annual American Association of Law
Libraries conference. You must be a member of NJLLA and write a brief essay.
Deadline is usually April 1.
- Baker & Taylor/NMRT Grassroots Grant -- pays for first-time NJLA annual conference attendance.
Application deadline is usually March 1.
- NASIG (North American Serials Interest Group) -- pays for conference and membership. Form available by Nov. 15; http://nasig.org.
- Pratt-Severn Best Student Research Award in Information Science -- $500, in
association with ASIST. Information from http://www.asis.org.
- ALA Awards -- there are quite a few that students can try for; check the ALA
Handbook (see Sources) and/or http://www.ala.org/ (click on Awards and Scholarships).
- Society of American Archivists -- offers an annual award for best
student paper. See http://www.archivists.org.
- Rovelstad
Scholarship in International Librarianship, sponsored
by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), allows
a student to attend the World Library and Information Congress of
the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions
(IFLA).
