There are numerous web sites of interest to those working with young people. Some relate specifically to youth literature; others to sites in schools and public libraries; others to religious information; still others to sites created for and with young people; and finally, those sites of special interest such as zoos, museums and the like.

 

In addition, there is a complete text available of CHILD SAFETY ON THE INFORMATION HIGHWAY, a must read for those working with youth.

Be assured that new sites are added when discovered or suggested by other web surfers.

ENCOMPASSING YOUTH LITERATURE SITES

Children's Literature Web Guide provides Internet Resources Related to Books for Children and Young Adults. Created and maintained by David K. Brown, University of Calgary.

Fairrosa's Library of Children's Literature provides a list and linking to a very large number of children's literature resources.

Books for Children and More Excellent source for information on children's books and resources.

The Children's Book Council HomePage This is a very crisp and to the point homepage. Provides a membership list with details of publishers in the field. Includes copy of "Choosing a Child's Book" designed for parents and teachers.

Index on the Middle Ages Excellent links on the Middle Ages.

Story Resources Available on the Web Homepage Maintained by Sherri Johnson this site provides "a reference page for the aficionados of both storytelling and the stories told." Includes tales from many cultures.

The Storytelling Home Page This site is maintained by Jim Maroon and provides a wonderful collection of storytelling resources and puppetry materials.

Medieval World Homepage created by Edward T. Sullivan contains annotated bibliographies on dragons, castles, knights and medieval life. Outstanding resources and hotlinks to materials on Robin Hood and Arthurian Legends.

Dial-a-Book, Inc Commercial Service with nice links, including to Newbery history, criteria and latest titles.

Children's Literature Home Page Useful source of information for quick reviews and additional information on children's books.

History/Social Studies Web Site for K-12 Teachers Homepage is maintained by Dennis Boals who also has several other homepages. Contains documents, text files and hotlinks to resources and is particularly useful for the diversity of approaches provided.

Centre Point Provides a huge list of resources.

Banned Books On-Line A special exhibit of books that have been the object of censorship or censorship attempts. Includes both adult and youth materials.

Children's Literature Center, Library of Congress Brief history and background of the Center including information on collections, hours, etc.

You may wish to connect to Empowering Girls website.

A Celebration of Women Writers This site contains links to information about women writers as well as actual texts and recordings. Alphabetical arrangement.

Voices of Women Home Page Master directory to all kinds of sites relating to women. Great for networking to women's services, including health information.

Feminist Science Fiction, Fantasy and Utopias Maintained by Laura Quilter. One of the best websites with an excellent selection of resources. The information on authors is above average and it is frequently updated.

YOUTH STUDIES

Center for Adolescent Studies Home Page This site, at Indiana University, focuses on meeting the social and emotional growth development needs through providing help to adults working with youth.

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Homepage Particularly useful for their large list of facts on subjects of importance to adolescents and children such as suicide, health issues, divorce, discipline, and drinking. Available in English, French, and Spanish.

Magic School Bus Scholastic site on the books by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degan and starring Ms. Frizzle.

Treasure Island A beautifully arranged website with humor and fun on the age-old classic Treasure Island.

Herge's Tintin All you ever wanted to know about Tintin. Includes Herge biography and pictures.

Comics A passionate collector and lover of comics, primarily European, share favorites, great stuff.

RELIGIOUS SITES

Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance This excellent site promotes understanding and tolerance of minority religions; exposes religious hatred and misinformation; and provides information on controversial topics.

The Religious Society of Friends WWW Site A long list of links on Friends, including a number on non-violence materials.

Christian Sites to Be Seen Enormous number of links to Christian ministries for youth.

Judaism and Jewish Resources Maintained by Andrew Tannenbaum and contains a wide range of Jewish resources and connections to other homepages.

Christian Resources Includes a huge number of Christian youth ministry sites and an excellent group of links to magazines.

American Memory Project The Library of Congress project of rich digital resources.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District This page from Fairbanks, Alaska "is intended to be an information resource for staff, students, and parents as well as for visitors wanting to learn more about our district, borough, and state."

Eagle Ridge Elementary School, Phoenix, AZ This site includes a great deal of information on the southwest and links to many children's resources. This site is created and maintained by Linn Boswell.

Eastchester Middle School, New York This site offers terrific web sites for middle school kids, Sites are categorized to be helpful.

Peter Milbury's Homepage includes hotlinks to Milbury's teaching, writing and networking links as well as an extensive hot list of school librarian and school library websites.

Multnomath Public Library Kid's Page A delightful site with all sorts of help and joy for kids.

Internet Public Library Meet J.J., your librarian, as you work your way through a variety of youth services in public libraries. Pay particular attention to the "Ask the Author" section.

The Ask ERIC Virtual Library It sure beats manual searching of Eric. Nicely designed for ease of use. Includes curriculum guides!

Cyberspace Middle School Designed for 6th through 9th graders using the WWW to help get an education.

Teen-Scene Richmond, Canada public library teen advisory council maintains this page. A wonderful set of links to Asian-Pacific resources are provided.

Hillside Elementary School in Minnesota One of the earliest websites listing a large number of websites in schooling.

Jon's Home School Resource Page A large number of links to resources on home schooling.

Public Library Research Available on the Internet Developed by Sarah Ormes this site bring together a great deal of information that is international in scope.

Little Horus Website Little Horus Web Site is the first Egyptian Web Site designed and developed specially for kids around the Globe.

The Boomerwolf Designed for children with amusing characters but sound science.

Plugged In Great community Project--Plugged In's mission is to bridge the technological gap between East Palo Alto and the Silicon Valley.

Bugwatch Nicely done and should intrigue youngsters.

Origami Page This page is maintained by Joseph Wu and provides more than you might wan to know about origami.

MUSEUMS, ZOOS, ETC

The Franklin Institute Science Museum This site includes several virtual exhibits.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Maps of the Met floors with photos of two or three items per room. Images can be clicked on and enlarged for detailed viewing.

Le Louvre Web Museum Electronic version of visiting the Louvre. Clicking on thumbnail images and they are enlarged for detailed viewing.

Yuckiest Site on the Internet This site is maintained by New Jersey Online. Cockroaches is the current yucky item in this great site.

Sea World Busch Gardens Provides teacher guides, outreach programs and a marvelous animal information database.

Smithsonian Home Page Contains many links to the Smithsonian museums. The graphics are good but often large.

Exploratorium HomePage San Francisco Emphasis is on interactivity in the exhibits. A great children's museum to explore.

The Why Files A project of the National Institute for Science Education, offers well-researched and clearly written investigations of current topics in science. A new story is posted every other week, and the site also includes a small but worthy collection of scientific images.

Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago Very large graphics and many opportunities to explore a delightful museum.

International Children's Art Museum Good example of working cooperatively on projects with overall theme established from year to year.

Views of the Solar System Good photos for use in projects.

Human Genome Project Useful to older children who have projects in this area.

The Children's Art Gallery This is a marvelous example of valuing the work of children, in this instance art work. Just Lovely.

Colonial Williamsburg This site provides access to a number of educational resources on this colonial area.

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum This Washington DC Museum offers information on the teaching of the Holocaust.

Electronic Zoo Originally a text file describing animal related computer resources on the Internet. Provides pointers to veterinary and animal resources.
