Marriage with Robert Schumann 1840 - 1856

1840
Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck marry on September 12 and settle in Leipzig.

1841
First concert as Clara Schumann in the Leipziger Gewandhaus, March 31.
Birth of her first child (of eight): Marie, September 1.
Song accompaniments, op. 12, Die gute Nacht, Sonatine.

1842
Concert tours to Hamburg and Copenhagen.
Sechs Lieder mit Begleitung des Pianoforte, op. 13, Deuxième Scherzo pour le Pianoforte.

1843
Birth of the second child, Elise, April 25.
Clara composes several songs for voice and piano: Beim Abschied, Loreley, O weh des Scheidens

1844
Concert tour to Russia with Robert Schumann, January 25 - May 30.
Clara is named a honorary member of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society, March 5. The family moves to Dresden.

Birth of Ferdinand, July 16.

Concerts in Leipzig, Bremen, and Hamburg with Robert Schumann.
The family moves to Duesseldorf, where Robert starts working as a music director of the Duesseldorf orchestra.

Birth of Eugenie, December 1.
Clara continues concertizing and teaching.

1853
Publication of many of her piano works completed (Leipzig, Breitkopf and Haertel).
Johannes Brahms, age 20, visits the family in September. He becomes her lifetime friend and admirer.
Robert Schumann is dissmissed as music director.
Concert tour to Holland together with Robert Schumann.

Robert Schumann attempts suicide, February 27 and is committet to the asylum in Endenich, March 4, where he remains until his death in 1856.
Birth of her last child Felix, June 11.
Clara Schumann begins extensive concert tours in October 1854.
