BASIC SAILING: Nautical Flags

  • Flags are the most basic form of wind indicator. If hoisted on a mast, they can be used to help figure out which way the wind is blowing. You can also use telltales for better accuracy.

  • Flags can also be strung together, [nautical flags string] and hung between a ships masts for festive occasions.

  • Flags can also be used to communicate with other boats. There is an International Code of Signals that can be represented using nautical flags. These signals were created to aid communication between boats, in both times of calm and distress.

    • Each flag has a letter equivalent, and can be used to spell out messages. In addition, some flags have individual meaning and can be used by themselves or in combination with others to convey a message.

    • International Flag Codes - provides pictures of all the International Maritime Signal Flags: the alphabet flags, pennants, and their meanings. Compiled by Jim Croft of the Australian National Botanic Gardens.
