She is happy and satisfied with her life's accomplishments. Notice how intently the town's children are listening to Miss Rumphius as she tells them stories of her adventures. She is smiling in a contented way as her adoring grandniece listens from her front row seat.

She is connected to her family and her community. Even though she is very old, she holds a respected place in the family and her community.

She has traveled to far away places. There are many items in the room, including the African sculpture, the large seashells, and the white parrot, which she could not have gotten locally at the time. The paintings of a tropical island and a sailing ship show her interest in the world at large.
