life's accomplishments. Notice how intently the town's children
are listening to Miss Rumphius as she tells them stories of her
adventures. She is smiling in a contented way as her adoring grandniece
listens from her front row seat.
She is connected to her family and her
community. Even though she is very old, she holds a respected
place in the family and her community.
She has traveled to far away places.
There are many items in the room, including the African sculpture,
the large seashells, and the white parrot, which she could not
have gotten locally at the time. The paintings of a tropical island
and a sailing ship show her interest in the world at large.
