Later in Dinner at Aunt Connie's House,
Melody declares "I want to be president of the United States
when I grow up so I can change some of the things that make people's
lives sad. I know I can do it because of these women."
Ringgold explained her personal philosophy
that is developed through Melody's character. "...my books

them a belief that they can change things."
Faith Ringgold, We Flew Over the
Bridge (Boston, MA : Little Brown, 1995)
