Later in Dinner at Aunt Connie's House, Melody declares "I want to be president of the United States when I grow up so I can change some of the things that make people's lives sad. I know I can do it because of these women."

Ringgold explained her personal philosophy that is developed through Melody's character. "...my books are even more about children having dreams, and instilling in them a belief that they can change things."
