Program Meetings

SCILS Ph.D. Program Meetings:
  • Wednesday, Sept. 10, 11:00 am – Noon, Scholarly Communication Center 
  • Wednesday, Dec. 3, 11:00 am – Noon, CIL 212

Dissertation Series

Preliminary dissertation proposals and public presentations of completed dissertations are scheduled on Friday afternoons.  

Friday Ph.D. Colloquia and Parties (all in SCILS Faculty Lounge):

  • Sept. 12, 1:30-3:00 pm
  • Oct. 3, 1:30-3:00 pm
  • Oct.  24, 1:30-3:00 pm
  • Dec. 5, 1:30-3:00 pm; Practicum Presentations and Party Today as well
  • Dec. 12, 1:30-3:00 pm

Students wishing to reserve a spot for a pre-proposal or dissertation presentation need to contact Joan Chabrak immediately to do so.

Colloquium Series

Colloquia are offered by the Ph.D. program on Wednesday evenings.  These colloquia are purposefully linked with the program's introductory course, 194:601 - Communication, Information, and Media Theory.  Each colloquia includes a discussion of current trends in research by three faculty members from one of our program options (Communication, Library and Information Science, and Media Studies).

Announcements about the Dissertation Series are made to the Ph.D. listserv as appropriate throughout the year.   

Wednesday Evening Colloquia as Part of 601 Course (all in SCILS Faculty Lounge):
  • Oct. 15, 7:00 – 9:00 pm: Media Studies Faculty Presentations
  • Nov. 5, 7:00 – 9:00 pm:  Communication Faculty Presentations
  • Dec. 3, 7:00 – 9:00 pm:   Library and Information Science Faculty Presentations

Research Practicum Showcase

A Wednesday or Friday date at the end of each semester is scheduled to showcase all of the research practicum projects completed by students that semester. An end of semester party for all doctoral students, faculty, and staff follows these presentations (see above schedule).
