Jerome Aumente recently completed two weeks of reporting workshops for Serbian journalists on business, financial and economic reporting in Belgrade and Nis sponsored by the U.S. State Department, the American Embassy and the International Broadcasting Bureau-Voice of America.

Nancy Cherry Named Fifth New Jersey Media Group Fellow
Nancy Cherry, co-chief of The Record's News copydesk, has been selected as NJMG's next teaching fellow at Rutgers University. Nancy will start her fellowship in September, teaching a class in journalism and taking, for free, a class related to her work at The Record.

Muller said the idea for his talk, to be on Feb. 16 at SCILS, came out his experience and conversations he's had over the years with colleagues covering local issues.

Jan Barry Named North Jersey Media Group Journalist-in-Residence for Spring 2005 Semester at Rutgers
Staff writer for The Record Jan Barry has been named the North Jersey Media Group Journalist-in-Residence for Spring 2005. After serving in Vietnam, Barry became a peace activist and has had his poetry published in several publications. He is the author of Earth Songs: New & Selected Poems and A Citizen's Guide to Grassroots Campaigns. Barry will be teaching news reporting and writing at SCILS on Monday nights during the spring semester. More information on Barry can be found at http://www.janbarry.net/.

Veteran Journalist Named Fellow for Fall Semester at Rutgers
Back-to-school season this year will find three North Jersey Media Group Daily Division staffers at the head of their classes – teaching them, that is. Scott Muller, news editor of the Herald News, was selected as the company’s Journalist-in-Residence at Rutgers University. Scott will teach an undergraduate journalism course at the New Brunswick campus and select a work-related course tuition-free.

Journalists in South Africa that could lay a foundation for

education seminars and workshops.

Development Project Will Engage Trenton Teenagers as Fledgling

Award-winning columnist Tom Davis has been
selected as the spring 2004 "North Jersey Media Group
Journalist in Residence" at Rutgers University. Davis

Aumente Named Program
Evaluator for State Department Journalism Program in Russia
Jerome Aumente, Distinguished Professor Emeritus
at Rutgers University, has been selected as the program evaluator
for a long-term project funded by the U.S. State Department
in which University of Missouri School of Journalism and its
counterpart, the School of Journalism at Moscow State University,
will work together to modernize curricula, pursue joint research
and faculty exchanges.

Resources Institute Launches Ethnic & Immigrant Media
Project
The Ethnic Media Project’s
first initiative was to hold an Ethnic Media Leadership Roundtable
at Rutgers on July 15, 2003. The half-day session gathered
more than a dozen editors and top executives from a variety
of ethnic media outlets in New York and New Jersey.

Flip Wilson Scholarship
Created at Rutgers
Rutgers is pleased to announce the creation
of the Flip Wilson Scholarship for the study of journalism.
Wilson, a New Jersey native, was an award-winning comedian
who in 1970 won a Grammy for Best Comedy Recording for "The
Devil Made Me Buy This Dress."

Aumente to write a history of newspapers in New Jersey and
the key activities of the association to mark the 150th anniversary
of the NJPA in 2007.

Seminars
for Print and Broadcast Journalists on Covering Health and
Childhood Development Launched by Children’s Futures
Covering childhood development, health and survival
issues from prenatal through the crucially important toddler
years will be the focus of an ongoing series of practical
seminars for print and broadcast journalists in New Jersey
sponsored by “Children’s Futures”, a nonprofit
initiative in Trenton supported by a $20 million grant from
the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The continuing professional
education series, which begins on June 19, is cosponsored
by the New Jersey Press Association, the Rutgers University
School of Communication, Information and Library Services
(SCILS), and its Journalism Resources Institute (JRI).

Awards
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. April 17, 2003— The Department of
Journalism and Media Studies of Rutgers University and CIT,
the Livingston, New Jersey-based commercial and consumer finance
company, presented the Sixteenth Annual Journalism Awards
for Distinguished Business & Financial Reporting of New
Jersey Issues on Thursday, April 10th, 2003. This year’s
competition was as intense as ever, and judges had a difficult
time deciding the winners among such a large number of deserving
entries.
