Dean Gustav Friedrich’s successful tenure as Dean, and his 40 year career in higher education, was celebrated on April 24, 2008, at a festive reception held at the Brower Commons Faculty Dining Room. More than 150 of Gus’ friends, colleagues, protégés, and their families attended to wish him well as he begins a sabbatical prior to his anticipated 2009 retirement from the University. Humorous and poignant reminisces were contributed by Dr. Phil Furmanski, Rutgers Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Hartmut Mokros, Associate Dean of SCILS, Penny Gardner, incoming President of the SCILS Alumni Association, Renee Swartz, Chair of the New Jersey Center for the Book, and other admirers and family.
