Description: The tradition of oral narration as a medium of cultural communication, appraisal of literatures suitable for oral presentation; techniques for introducing literature through story hours, creative dramatics, and multimedia; the use of new media and electronic technologies for presentation to audiences at a distance.
Synopsis: Course Objectives:
- Recognition of the values of storytelling, with emphasis on motivating reading and nurturing the imaginative experiences of childhood.
- Knowledge of contemporary and traditional literature for oral presentation.
- Knowledge of resource materials in storytelling.
- Mastery of the techniques of learning and telling a story.
- Expertise in planning story programs for various ages in libraries and other settings.
Course Organization:
This course is intended to introduce students to the academic study of storytelling as well as to the practice of the art itself. Class periods will include a mixture of theoretical lectures, discussions, and interactive learning activities that will help students to develop the tools needed to use storytelling in students? personal lives and professional careers.
