Pre-requisites: Substantial course work in the ITI major needs to have been completed (27 credits). Prior approval of proposed independent project by Director of the ITI Program and internal academic supervisor.
Description: An Independent Study is an individually negotiated learning program of approximately 150 hours. Students design, negotiate and manage a program of study based on their existing experience and knowledge and on their longer term work intentions. Typically this study is not available to the students through the range of elective courses provided in the ITI major. The study builds however on existing knowledge and skills acquired during the major. Students identify learning objectives, construct a program of research, investigation and documentation, and determine how learning outcomes are demonstrated to the academic supervisor in SCILS.
Synopsis: Objectives/Competencies
The student will be able to:
- plan a course of study and independent research on a topic of special interest, and which builds on existing ITI knowledge and skills;
- identify learning goals, establish learning strategies to meet goals, identify appropriate resources, establish how learning outcomes will be demonstrated and assessed;
- develop knowledge and skills in area of expertise related to the ITI program of study outside of the regular classroom experience;
- apply knowledge and technical competencies acquired within the major;
- understand the importance of professionalism and continuing professional development in information technology environments.
