The Department of Communication offers the following awards and scholarships for undergraduate students: Public Speaking AwardsANN BUSSING SPEAKING AWARD - prize in extemporaneous speaking. MYRON SMITH SPEAKING AWARD - prize for first and second best orators of Sophomore class. IRVING UPSON SPEAKING AWARD - best and second best speakers in Junior class in extemporaneous speaking contest. Awards For JuniorsTHE KELLY-SCHIMPF COMMUNICATION AWARD - for Juniors who have made exceptional professional contributions or demonstrated exceptional professional promise in Public Relations or Corporate Communications (or similar fields). THE MARY L. BAGLIVO SCHOLARSHIP - for Juniors who have an interest in advertising, a good GPA, and who meet other requirements (like needing financial aid). This award is for two annual scholarships of $2500 each. These go to full-time undergraduate students (juniors) who are enrolled at SCILS and who have an interest in advertising. Awards will be based on academic merit as determined by the program administrator and financial need as determined by the financial aid office. Qualified students must submit the appropriate financial aid form by March 1 to be eligible for the award each year. This award is not offered every year. JULIAN BREEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - For a sophomore or junior Communication major who demonstrates a significant commitment to the department, to the University, and/or to community service. STEVEN AND CYNTHIA MAGIDSON SCHOLARSHIP - For a junior who demonstrates overall excellence as a Communication major and potential for success in his/her career. Awards For SeniorsTHE JOHNSON & JOHNSON AWARD FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE - presented to a student judged to have provided exemplary service to city, region, or state. THE JOHNSON & JOHNSON AWARD FOR HEALTH OR HUMAN WELFARE SERVICE - presented to a student judged to have provided exemplary service that promotes health or human welfare on campus or in the community. THE TODD HUNT PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD - presented to a student judged to have provided exemplary service to more than one group or society. This is for seniors who have provided service to the campus, community, or the professions utilizing their communication expertise. THE WINIFRED N. COSTIGAN COMMUNICATION AND HEALTH ISSUES AWARD in memory of Winifred N. Costigan, a devoted teacher - presented to one or more students judged to have made outstanding contributions to the promotion of communication and health issues on the Rutgers campus. THE STORER COMMUNICATION AWARD - for Seniors demonstrating academic excellence. HUGH TALIAFERRO MEMORIAL AWARD - For seniors who demonstrate unusual aptitude in Communication or render exceptional service to the department or University community. THE COMMUNICATION ALUMNI AWARDS - for graduating Seniors with the highest overall GPA within each college. DEPARTMENTAL HONORS - this is based on Communication course Grade Point Average (not the college gpa, which is the gpa listed on the transcript), with highest honors at 3.896 and above, high honors at 3.696 and above, and honors at 3.496 and above. THE DEPARTMENTAL RECOGNITION AWARD - for Seniors showing unusual aptitude in communication or rendering exceptional service to the department or University Community. COMMUNICATION HONORS PROGRAM- for Seniors who have completed their two-semester long thesis project. STUDENT OF NOTE TO BE GONFALON BEARER AT GRADUATION CEREMONY - this honor is rotated among the SCILS departments. The student can be selected from the above list of honored students if appropriate. |
