What is the APLab?
The Alexandria Project Laboratory is a research organization
within the School of Communication, Information, and Library Studies at Rutgers the State University of New Jersey. The aim of
the Laboratory is to study "the library function" or the organization
and provision of access to information. Laboratory will attack problems in a
sharply focused, time-limited fashion with the goal of providing meaningful
solutions or analyses on a contract basis for clients or member organizations.
The Laboratory will also study issues of a broader nature with results
applicable to the larger world of digital libraries, networks, and information
agencies. The name of the Laboratory recalls the library at Alexandria, the first in the western world,
and has been chosen to reflect the continuity of library goals and objectives.
It is intended that the Laboratory will provide a collegial setting for
these projects bringing together experienced researchers, graduate students at
the University, and visiting investigators from participating libraries and
corporations. A series of publications results from the research efforts.
Technical reports will first be sent to agencies which contract for research
studies. Seminars and short courses will be offered by the Laboratory for
associates of the Laboratory and for students in the University.
The Laboratory solicits proposals for research projects and for membership
in the Laboratory itself. For further information please contact Dr. Kantor at
SCILS, Rutgers University,
4 Huntington St.,
Rm. 214, New Brunswick, NJ 08901
or by email: kantor@scils.rutgers.edu.
Since its inception, APLab has been viewed as having cooperative
arrangements with libraries and information agencies who might serve as
research sites and with corporations or agencies which might sponsor research
projects. This cooperative aspect is in direct agreement with the Lab's goal of
providing meaningful solutions or analyses for clients or member organizations.
Ideas for relevant research projects can come from many sources - APLab
fellows, Rutgers students, librarians and
information specialists, and information seekers. APLab solicits the submission
of ideas for research projects. The Lab research needs appropriate sites and/or
subjects for its projects. Libraries and information agencies interested in
participating in such activities should contact Dr. Paul Kantor. Finally, it
must be remembered that research and its outcomes are never free. Research
sponsors are therefore sought and interested agencies or corporations should
contact the Lab.
