Steve's S(C)ites of the week – Professor Avatar

 Steve's Avatar: librarysteve

To many of my students, this is me. This is my avatar...he has a name, librarysteve, and actually the name has been around longer than the avatar. He's probably a bit better looking than me, but I do like to think that he represents my personality well.

At the beginning of my Social Software class I have all my students create avatars for themselves on Yahoo Avatars, and they use these avatars throughout class. I did this originally to help shelter their privacy, but oddly enough I've gotten to know them all via their avatars...how they look, the expressions they wear, the backgrounds they use...all help me to remember who they are as people and not just names in my gradebook...

This coming week my class is going "in world" and will be exploring Second Life and immersive gaming. Hence, the issue of avatars and persona returns in full force as people create identity for themselves to use in vitrual environments.

As I thought more and more of my persona in Second Life (the newly created Libros Grunszpan), I also got to thinking about the persona I create for myself in my general online life. Who am I? Who do I think I am? What things in my life do I want to present? When will online cognitive dissonance occur? As I set out to see if anyone else was discussing this online I came across this great article from insidehighered.com ...if you have a presence on the web...I think it's worth checking out:

Steve's S(C)ites of the week – A Little Politeness, Please?
April 20th, 2008 / 8:36 am
First a disclaimer, yes, I do have a store on Cafe Press called the Politeness Place, but that's not why I'm writing this post, actually the store was part of my answer to a question I asked myself a while back:What happened to simple politeness?Check-out lines, drive throughs, email interactions...what happened to please and thank you? What happened to holding the door for someone who's coming
