New Tutorial for ITI Students

Myoung Wilson, the SCILS library specialist at Alexander Library, in coordination with other colleagues and students, has completed the development of the ITI Library Tutorial. The tutorial is available at http://alexref.rutgers.edu/iti/ and presents opportunities for undergraduate students to understand how to navigate the Rutgers University library system, as well as highlighting the specific indexes, databases, and reference resources for information technology.

I would like to encourage every undergraduate to try the tutorial and to provide feedback. There is a welcome video tour, plus a virtual tutorial on locating articles and resources for completing academic work. There is a listing of relevant indexes and databases, along with a list of reference sources which can be helpful when trying to decide and discern a paper topic. There is information on how to browse the online resources, write a paper, develop APA citation, definitions of key terms such as a scholarly peer-reviewed journal, and links to subject appropriate resources. Myoung Wilson encourages all SCILS students to please contact her if they are in need of assistance in utilizing the library.

I hope faculty and students will review the tutorial, provide feedback and take advantage of this wonderful resource. Thank you to the group who worked hard to develop the tutorial.

I Think I’ve Been Teaching the Reference Interview the Wrong Way
December 8th, 2007 / 11:55 am
As noted previously, I have been conducting observations of an experienced academic reference librarian. Another lesson I have learned is the value of the reference interview. Of particular note, however, was how this reference librarian with decades of service conducted the interview. In general, the librarian would start with the initial request of the user, whatever it might be. “Okay, you need

A Lesson about Reference Formatting
December 2nd, 2007 / 4:22 pm
I had an interesting and learning experience the other day. I was observing a highly experienced reference librarian at his job for a research project. A question was posed completely outside of the librarian’s field of expertise – even in another language. As the librarian worked on the quest to locate the article for the graduate student, he used indications about how the reference was formatted
