Espresso On Demand Takes Over Library

I attended the New York Library Club reception at the New York Public Science, Industry and Business Library on the anniversary of 9/11. The big talk of the reception was everyone wanting to see how the Espresso on Demand machine worked. Whatever are they talking about, I wondered?

The Espresso Book Machine (EBM) produces "a library quality perfect bound paperback book" in a matter of minutes. The machine is fully automated, producing the book from a PDF file. Indeed, in the seven minutes of the demonstration, a perfectly bound copy of Jason Epstein's (2001) The Book Business literally came hot off the press.

Currently 13 public domain titles are available and more are being added. The On Demand Books company had access to more than 200,000 out-of-copyright files toegher with approximately 2,2100 World Bank titles and Arabic-language texts from the Library of Alexandria, Egypt.

I could not help but wonder about the implications of this impressive technological feat. The production cost is a penny a page! The cover stock is tabloid, high gloss. A newer version of the machine is already in production which will have a smaller footprint and perform even faster. I'm not sure how I feel. But it certainly beats Starbucks by a mile.

With the institution of online databases, the World Wide Web and social networking, reference has become so much more. And the "more" is about process.Engaging in reference requires the efforts of not just the

I Think I’ve Been Teaching the Reference Interview the Wrong Way
December 8th, 2007 / 11:55 am
As noted previously, I have been conducting observations of an experienced academic reference librarian. Another lesson I have learned is the value of the reference interview. Of particular note, however, was how this reference librarian with decades of service conducted the interview. In general, the librarian would start with the initial request of the user, whatever it might be. “Okay, you need
