Coming up: Judy Blume, Sweet Valley High, and More

Last week Random House Children's Books hosted librarians and reviewers to introduce forthcoming titles for late spring and summer.  It was a four-hour extravaganza with over 100 titles introduced, each by the editor who worked on it, followed by a brief address by Wendelin Van Draanen, whose Confessions of a Serial Kisser is scheduled to come out in May.

Here are some of the highlights from the presentation:

  • Sweet Valley High is back!  The romance series of early-YA's is being reissued with updated references to popular culture - the editor was forthright in stating that the target audience is both current teens and ex-teens who remember the series fondly.
  • Judy Blume will have a new book out in May: Cool Zone with the Pain and the Great One.  It focuses on bullying and how to deal with it, always an important issue for elementary age kids (target audience is ages 5-9) and apparently increasing around the country.
  • A first novel about race in the South c. 1963 looks really strong - too late for Black History Month this year but worth a look-see: A Thousand Never Evers, by Shana Burg. (Target age: 9-12)
  • Heck, Where the Bad Kids Go by Dale E. Basye looks very funny - it's the first in a new series that was touted as "the next Series of Unfortunate Events." (Target age 9-12)
  • We get a vegan vampire in Brian Meehl's Suck It Up, a humorous entry in the seemingly never-ending parade of YA novels about vampires.

Next Saturday, March 16, the Children's and Young Adult Literature Cafe at the Donnell Library Center will feature Monica Edinger (one of Rutgers' occasional on-line instructors) discussing children's books and film.  Monica recently served on the 2008 Newbery Award committee (and while they are not allowed to discuss their deliberations, I know that she was very enthusiastic about the eventual
