Children's Literature Interest Group

We have a date, a time, and a place for the first meeting of the Rutgers Children's Literature Interest Group.  The organization of the group fell apart last term because I was overwhelmed by the task of reconciling everyone's schedules, so we're just going to pick a meeting time and hope interested people will show up.

The organizational meeting will be on Thursday, February 7, from 12-1:30 in the Faculty Lounge of the SCILS building.  All students, faculty, and staff who are interested in any aspect of children's books are invited to attend (it's okay to bring your lunch).  We will be talking about what sorts of things we would like to do in this area, and would like to have a discussion of this year's award winners by those who've had a chance to read them (typically, some of the winners are hard to get hold of right after the awards announcement).  If you are interested but cannot make this time, please e-mail me at: hastingw@rci.rutgers.edu  Also, if you know of people in other parts of the university who would be interested in joining us, please extend an invitation to them.

Last week Random House Children's Books hosted librarians and reviewers to introduce forthcoming titles for late spring and summer.  It was a four-hour extravaganza with over 100 titles introduced, each by the editor who worked on it, followed by a brief address by Wendelin Van Draanen, whose Confessions of a Serial Kisser is scheduled to come out in May.Here are some of the highlights from the

Next Saturday, March 16, the Children's and Young Adult Literature Cafe at the Donnell Library Center will feature Monica Edinger (one of Rutgers' occasional on-line instructors) discussing children's books and film.  Monica recently served on the 2008 Newbery Award committee (and while they are not allowed to discuss their deliberations, I know that she was very enthusiastic about the eventual
