Anthony Grafton's Codex in Crisis
Invitation by Labyrinth Books and The Crumpled Press to a reading,
discussion, and reception with Anthony Grafton to celebrate the public
release of his new book, Codex in Crisis on May 5 (Monday) 5:30 at
Labyrinth Books (122 Nassau St., Princeton).

In Codex in Crisis, Professor Grafton examines the new information
ecology¯ and explores the implications of digitization for the ways
that we read, write, and store information. Building on his acclaimed
essay for the New Yorker, Grafton offers a wide-ranging account of
earlier efforts to bring all information together into a single,
seamless database, from the great library at Alexandria to the spread
of microfiche in the 1950s and 60s. Like these efforts, he argues,
digitization has its own sweet spots and blind alleys' periods,
genres, and types of information that may recede into the background
of our collective memory.

The implications of digital media for the worlds of writing and
publishing are equally profound, as blogs and new initiatives to
provide free online access to scholarly texts simultaneously empower
the producers of knowledge and threaten the traditional role of
editors. Grafton provides a subtle analysis of these challenges and,
with equal enthusiasm for media old and new, offers a vibrant window
onto the future of books in a digital age.

Anthony Grafton is author of The Footnote, Bring Out Your Dead, New
Worlds, Ancient Texts, and numerous other publications. He is the
Henry Putnam University Professor of History and Chair of the Council
of the Humanities at Princeton University.

This event is free and open to the public.
