March Madness Pool in SCILS

Before I give an update on the March Madness Basketball Pool here in SCILS, let me quickly address two concerns others have already raised.  First, this is a pool for the men's tournament and as much as I personally would like to be in one for the women also (especially given the success of our team here at Rutgers), I don't have the resources to run that pool also. Second, for the purists among us who find such activities unbecoming of a professional environment, I would be happy to share with you some of what we know about the research on work-life balance suggesting the value of such activities for building community and reducing stress in organizations.

We have 19 SCILS faculty, staff, graduate students, and their family members in our pool this season (up from 13 in our innaugural year). Although Leon Lauriej appears well on his way to claiming the prize for last place (which does come with a refund of one's entry donation), everyone else is still in the hunt.  Our co-leaders after the first 2 rounds are...well, a bit of a mystery.  One is known simply as A.V. (anonymous victor? I wish I'd thought of that! We look forward to finding out who this is...) and the other is actually the mother of one of our graduate students (and she is well ahead of her son at this point). Defending champion Katie Lever is tied with Communication faculty member Jeff Robinson (who we note did not pick his own UCLA to win it all!) for third place.  I am in the very middle of the pack, tied for 10th.

Welcome back from break, everyone.  I hope it, like the March Madness tournament itself, provided you with some excitement last week!

Sounds like this random bracket picking is going to turn out as the cheapest experiment ever conducted at SCILS!

...We Have A Winner!

Even though Kansas and Memphis are still battling (as I type this) to see who will be the NCAA Men's Basketball Champion this year, we already know who the winners are in the SCILS March Madness tournament. Top honors go to the no-longer-mysterious A V (Alena Vasilyeva, that is), who pulled ahead by having Memphis in the finals.  Second place goes to Dr. Jen Theiss and third place was won by Reesa

Stop the (March) Madness...

Well, here we are one week later, and March Madness is...still a fun distraction from everything else.  In some ways, there is predictability here (#1 seeds all advancing as no one expected and AV--really the basketball guru Alena Vasilyeva--continues to lead our pool).  In other ways, there has been much excitement (Davidson missing a final shot that would have sent them to the Final Four as a
