CELEBRATING SCILS AT 25
It was 1926 that the undergraduate program in journalism was created at Rutgers. It was 1927 that an undergraduate program in librarianship began at the College for Women, later Douglass College, and 1953 when the masters degree in librarianship was established. It was 1971 that Rutgers first offered an undergraduate major in communication.
But it was 1982 that the School of Communication, Information and Library Studies was established at the university with the merger of the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies and the School of Communication Studies. What this means, of course, is that 2007 is the silver anniversary year of SCILS.
The SCILS Alumni Association made its major contribution to the 25th Anniversary celebrations by hosting a dinner celebration on Friday, October 12, at the Heldrich Hotel, New Brunswick's newest luxury hotel on the corner of George Street and Livingstone Avenue, directly opposite the New Brunswick theaters. The dinner consisted of a cocktail hour (with open bar), a sit-down four-course meal, musical entertainment annd dancing, and a program prepared by the SCILS Alumni Association honoring beloved people in and to the SCILS alumni community. The event was something that will be remembered for many, many years to come.
